Note
The S.S. Ranger, captained by John Paul Jones, hoists the American flag on his ship in the harbor at Quiberon, France, and is saluted on 14 Feb. 1778 by a French ship captained by La Motte Piquit.
The 26 x 43 cm. color photograph has a label on the mat board which reads: "NPC-C-1856. Paintong: "The first recognition of the American flag by a foreign government" by Edward Moran. Official U. S. Navy Photo Not to be used for publication unless officially released." The colors in this photograph have a more golden tone.
The 26 x 45 cm. color photograph has a label on the mat board which reads: "U. S. Naval Photographic Center. U. S. Naval station. Washington, D. C. 20390. Official U. S. Navy photograph. Officially released. K-21225. Painting: "The first recognition of the American flag by a foreign government" by Edward Moran. Also stamped on the back of the mat board it reads: "Property of the Curator for the Department of the Navy - Office of the Chief of Naval Operations - Washington 25, D.C." This photograpy carries the accession #P&E l1993.792. The colors in this photograph have a lighter, blue tone.
