Secretarial copy of a forged letter based loosely on an actual Cornwallis letter that had been intercepted by the Americans and forwarded to Henry Clinton with an official protest.
Docketed title: Copy of the falsified extract of a letter transmitted by General Washington to Sir Henry Clinton.
"I have given Order that all the inhabitants of this Province who have subscribed, and have taken part in this Revolt should be punished with the greatest Rigour"
Threatened punishments included imprisonment, property confiscation or destruction, and execution -- all contrary to official British policy.
Apparently intended to incense anti-British feelings and to intensify existing Clinton-Cornwallis dissension.
