Pencil and watercolor sketch with pen and ink wash. The military camps that were set-up in several London parks in the aftermath of the Gordon Riots of 1780 became a fashionable tourist attraction. In this sketch, the noted author Fanny Burney stands with her sister Susanna, flanking their brother Richard who is wearing his militia uniform. With them is Mr. Richard Crisp, who was removed from the composition in the published version. This is a study of a group that appears in Sandby’s engraving Encampment in the Museum Garden (P&E L2013F210 [framed]). Provenance: Mrs. Dorothy G. Hatswell; Rev. Edwin Harding.
