Responding to Emily's request for a contribution to an album, she reports on Lafayette's 1824 visit to Charlestown [Massachusetts] that " the hurry and bustle, the parade and splendor of receiving LaFayette have driven from my brain everything like thought and reflection."
Characterizes Lafayette as "ambitious, desirous of fame, fond of distinction, inspired with a love a military glory." Nevertheless, she "as well as others was ready to say, 'We bow not the neck, We bend not the knee, But our hearts, LaFayette, We surrender to thee.'"
Identifies the schoolgirl who presented Lafayette with a wreath as the daughter of one Dr. J. Ware of Boston. See A. Levasseur. Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825 (Philadelphia, 1829), p. 39, which mentions the event but does not mention the child.
