Chiefly concerns movements of Capt. Williams' Regiment (the 3rd Massachusetts) from Cambridge to New London by land, thence by ship to New York. Ordered to New York about 2 weeks later, they leave on 20 April for Albany, on the 27th for Stillwater, thence to Saratoga and Ft. Edward, where Williams visits the site of the Rogers' Rangers battle during which Putnam had been captured during the French and Indian War.
Ordered to Canada, but within 2-days' march of Quebec, he learns of the retreat and describes the effect on troop morale; also mentions effects of smallpox, of the American defeat at Three Rivers and The Cedars; evaluates military conduct of Col. Bedel and Maj. Butterfield; outlines plans to build fleet on Lake Champlain.
