"This Certifies that Augustin Brissault Captain in the First Partizan Legion being, in Virtue of his Services in the American Army, Entitled to become a Member of the Cincinnati, and having Signed the Institution and Complied with the Regulations therein specified, is accordingly admitted a Member; and is Entitled to all the Rights and Privileges of the Said Society of the Cincinnati." This is the earliest known example signed by both Washington and Knox of the certificate of membership in the Society of the Cincinnati issued to a few select members before the printed diplomas were available. Augustin Brissault (spelled Briffault in some published sources) came to America in 1778 and joined Armand's Partisan Legion in 1778. He was cited by both Armand and Lafayette for serving "with much reputation." He served through the war, achieving the rank of captain in 1782. Gift of George Miller Chester, Jr. (Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut) in honor of La Societe des Cincinnati de France and Raynald, duc de Choiseul Praslin, Past Vice President General of the Society of the Cincinnati. [Part of the George Miller Chester, Jr. (CT SOC) Collection of Historic General Washington Documents].
