Washington stands by a chair in front of window with his hands clasped together above his head, as he looks toward the heavens. A letter announcing the victory at Saratoge and Burgoyne's surrender to General Gates lies on the floor near his feet. Two officers from the Northern Army stand at a table on which is an open saddle bag that they had deliviered to the house at York where Washington was staying while Congress was in session.
