Acting upon the law passed 7 June 1832, Johnston declares that he enlisted in the 8th Virginia Regiment for 2 years.
Johnston served in the company belonging to Capt. George Slaughter, Maj. Peter Helverson's [i.e. Helphinstone's?] Battalion, Col. Mulenburg's [i.e. Muhlenberg's] Regiment.
Chronicles his service at Sullivan's Island, Savannah, Brandywine, and Germantown; he spent the winter at Valley Forge.
