Description

In this letter, Continental Brigadier General Sumner reported to his new southern commander, General Gates on difficulties of recruiting Continental Army. Following the surrender of Charleston by General Benjamin Lincoln in early May, the South was assigned to General Gates. One month later Gates was back at Hillsboro after his infamous retreat from the Camden battlefield and Congress soon looked for another Southern commander.
