Orders from Louis XVI, concerning subordination in the French Navy, communicated to d'Estaing by de Sartine.
Sartine concludes with a personal note to d'Estaing, in which he states that d'Estaing should "read the orders to the general officers and the captains, assembled on board ... and give them each a copy and order each to read it himself." Sartine "did not hesitate to assure His Majesty that his orders would be carried out punctually."
Note at end of letter: "copied from the original," and signed by d'Estaing "on board the Languedoc, first of June 1778." Transcription (in French) available in case file.
