Clinton, 2nd in command under Howe during this campaign, had been ordered to restore the King's authority in the 4 southern colonies and to rejoin Howe in the north. Clinton arrived at Cape Fear on 12 March; but Sir Peter Parker's fleet, ordered from Cork in Dec. 1775, did not begin to arrive until mid April; the last ships arrived 31 May, the day after the first entry in this letterbook.
Includes mention of specific ships and Parker's plans for them, including the Bristol, his flagship.
Paper covers; in brown cloth slipcase with leather spine.
Part 1. Peter Parker's proposal to attack Sulivan's [sic] Island and Clinton's reservations and counter proposals and to camp on Long Island (a. k.a. Isle of Palms), 30 May - 29 June -- part 2. Rhode Island correspondence, Newport and Chatham, 10 Dec. - 4 Jan. : letters exchange accusations and defenses for their respective actions before the battle in June.
