"... [T]he enemy are making preparations to evacuate [New York] soon. The River is alive with vessels going to & returning from the Capital. We poor Devils still labour under the want of money...."
"Nothing as yet has transpired respecting the Peace establishment except vague reports, that are not to be depended upon."
"A Society is formed in the Army, to be composed of all its Officers & of those who have served three years & have resigned with honour.... This Society is to be called the Cincin[n]ati ....The principles & constitution of the society, I can't at present inform you of ; but ... at present I am proud to call you brother, & to assure you that it will be our own faults if it is not the most respectable society in America."
Freeman amd Winslow were original members of the Massachusetts Socity of the Cincinnati
