"Received of Catain Adams Bailey his order in my favour and John Peirce [i.e., Pierce] Esquire Pay Master General to the American Army for the full amount of one months pay of his grade to be appropriated to the establishment of a fund agreeable to the institution of the Society of the Cincinnati

The Society's institution included the requirement that each member contribute one month's pay to the general fund of his state society -- see Minor Myers. Liberty without Anarchy (1983), p. 25.
Captain Adams Bailey was an orginal member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati; Jackson was its first treasurer.
John Pierce was an original member of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati. A John Peirce, not the Pay Master General, was an original member of the Massachusetts Society.
