First published in the magazine "The Land we love", v. 6, no. 3, Jan. 1869; Submitted by Fanny Fielding, of Norfolk, Va., as: "The Valley manuscript. < From a collection of archives known in our household by the above title, from which I have recently been making excerpts ...>" The reprint differs slightly from this version, with some paragraphs omitted.
The commonplace book is called the "Book of comfort" in W. O. Stevens' The Shenandoah and its byways, p. 211-217.
The authenticity of the diary has not been proved, as the original manuscript has not been found. Probably fictitious. Cf. p. 1.
