Jonathan Birge was a captain in the Connecticut troops during the American Revolutionary War. Serving in the 1776 New York campaign, he wrote from the field during the autumn retreat and the unsuccessful struggle for control of New York City, maintaining contact with his wife, Priscilla Birge, in Bolton, Connecticut. The collection comprises six letters dating from 15 August to 17 November 1776. Letters [1]–[5] are from Capt. Jonathan Birge to Priscilla Birge (15 August; 1 and 24 September; 6 and 20 October 1776) and discuss company activities, casualties, camp conditions, and requests for supplies. Letter [6] (17 November 1776), written by Edward Paine, Nathaniel West, and George Hubbard to Priscilla Birge, reports the death of Capt. Birge.
