Most concern historical matters of mutual interest, especially Van Doren's Secret history of the American Revolution and his Mutiny in January.
In research for the former, Van Doren explores the role of Samuel Wallis, Daniel Coxe, Joseph Stansbury, and others in the Benedict Arnold/Peggy Shippen Arnold conspiracy.
Numbers [4] and [8 - 11] concern Peggy Arnold's receipt for money Samuel Wallis collected for her and permission to publish a facsimile of it.
Number [5] relates to the "wily elusive [Nicholas] Haussegger/Houseker/Honseker.
Mutiny, which was published in 1943, records van Doren's findings about the 1781 revolt within the Pennsylvania Continental Line involving Williama Bowzer and others.
Many mention Now and then, a journal edited by Wood; several refer to the Clements Library; a few discuss family and health matters.
With (1) is a newspaper photograph of Van Doren.
Letters contain at upper left, numbers in ink that do not coincide with the library's numbers. In addition, all retain evidence of adhesive along the margins.
