Summary
Collection of twenty-nine manuscript estimates, returns, and statistical reports prepared by or for committees of the Continental Congress during 1779 and 1780 to evaluate the costs of maintaining and supplying the Continental Army. The documents include detailed estimates for horses, forage, wagons, harnesses, Quartermaster Department personnel, military pay, hospital expenses, clothing, provisions, tools, transportation, and anticipated tax revenues needed to support armies of varying strength. Prepared during congressional efforts to reform the Quartermaster General's Department, the collection documents the financial, logistical, and administrative planning required to sustain the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
