(1) Four p. on 2 conjugate leavesSep. 24th: No news but NewsPaper news is the fashion now; I wish an honorable peace was settled, P.S. The Duke of Montrose is dead."
Identify of the duke is uncertain. William Graham, Duke of Montrose died 23 Sept. 1790, having succeeded to the title in 1732. The letter is dated 24 Sept. without a year. In pencil on p. [4]: 1779? If 1779 were the date, the "peace" referenced would refer to that of the American Revolution.
(2) 8 March 1779: P.S. "Lord Suffolk died last friday of the Gout .... General Mostyn has been dead some time, his corps still undisposed of. We have taken 17 Domingo ships & a French 74 gun ship, their convoy"
Mostyn's corps was the 1st King's Dragoon Guards.
(3) 26 July 1779: mentions production of Army List and contains private list of commanders raising 12 new corps of infantry and 1 of dragoons.
(5) concerns the potential arrest of "the miscreant" identified only as "D" and the cause of altering the mode of military promotion
