Recalls the signficance of the anniversary of Washington's death "in connection with the impressive ... office we have today performed, of placing in your hands the splendid ornament [Diamond Eagle] which once graced the breast of George Washington."
Includes, in Dearborn's hand, notice of the death 49 years earlier, at which time "I was then only 17 years old."
Dearborn was the Society's eighth President General and the first successor member to hold the office.
