Note
A man, probably Captain Delaplace, stands in doorway in night clothes holding a candle, with his wife standing behind him. The man who has roused him, probably Ethan Allen, stands before the door with his left hand in the air and his right hand holding a drawn sword. He is accompanied by a boy, probably Nathan Beman, carrying a lantern. In the background soldiers skirmish.
This is similar to an illustration from Spencer's, History of the United States, Vol 1, between pages 354 and 355. That copy does not credit the engraver, but says, "Painted by Alonzo Chappel" below the engraving. It is copyrighted by Johnson, Fry & Co. in 1866. This copy may be from a later edition of Spencer, published by Martin & Johnson.
