A portrait of James Mugford is centered in the work. Head and shoulders, to the right, in uniform with hat. Oval with laural leaves forming a border and an eagle at the top. To the left is the schooner Franklin and to the right the armed British transport ship Hope. Below the title is text describing the grave condition of Washington's forces, who lacked powder to defend Boston and why the capture of the ship Hope, laden with powder and supplies outside Boston harbor in 1776 was so important to the independence efforts and praising Capt. Mugford and his men.
This lithograph was removed from its original frame and preserved in the vault in its light blue 4" French mat with inner black single line border.
