Originally issued in 1776 as "The Canadian freeholder, a dialogue shewing the sentiment ... ". This was reissued the following year, and the title changed to read "in two dialogues". Later a third year , and the title changed to read " in two dialogues". Later a third volume was added.--Cf. Sabin.
Vol. 2 has title: The Canadian freeholder : in three dialogues ...
The work was intended to convey the feelings of French-Canadians, and is in the form of dialogues between an English gentleman and a well-to-do Canadian freeholder of the Roman Catholic religion.
