Washington's acceptance of the accompanying volume, not on account of the instrinsic value but from its appropriateness to his professional character; yet more especially because it belonged to her lamented husband, for whom Lieut. W___ manifested a respectful regard in life, I gave public testimonials of that respect when the mortal part was about being consigned to the repository of the dead. State Sr. Jany 8 1846."
