Note
A modern view of the house as if approaching the front porch. A cannon is seen on the lawn beyond the house. The artist's initials, JF, appear in the lower left corner of the print. In the margin below the engraving is an engraved scroll tied in a ribbon which reads: Farewell Address. The title has been written in pencil to the left of the scroll. The artist's signature is to the right. A copyright symbol has been printed at the lower left below the engraving.
The Berrien House in Rocky Hill, N.J. was used by George Washington as his headquarters from August to November of 1783. It was here that Washington wrote his farewell address to the army at the close of the war.
This engraving was removed from its frame to be preserved in the P&E files in the vault. It carried Mus. no. 785.
