Concerns the monument to George Washington to be erected in New York City
"I am much gratified ... that this monument will not be merely a pile of stone; but that it is to contain also a library, a picture gallery, & c. ....[I]f it is thought necessary to commemorate by a "trophy hall" the military fame of him who was, after all much more a lover of peace than of war, it is to be hoped that these painful insignia of human slaughter will be confined to those and those only of the American Revolution...."
