The scene of the battle with General Joseph Warren lying dead in the center surrounded by anxious officers with the battle raging in the background.
This is a copy of the first engraving arranged by Trumbull after he completed his painting, titled, The death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, 17 June 1775, in Benjamin West's studio in London in 1786. Because no English engravers would produce a work celebrating the victory of the Americans during the Revolution, Trumbull had to travel to Stuttgart where he had it engraved by Muller and later published by A. C.de Poggi in London in 1798. The companion painting, The death of General Montgomery in the Battle of Quebec Dec.r 1775 was engraved by Danish engraver J. F. Clemens in London and later published by Poggi. (P&E L2008G44 framed)
Framed in a gold and black frame with plain ivory mat.
This engraving was included in the exhibition "Massachusetts in the American Revolution - Let it begin here," which was on display at Anderson House from October 23, 1997 to May 2, 1998.
