Partially printed document, witnessed by Will[iam] Johnston, clerk of the court.
"You are hereby again commanded to take George Rogers Clark ... to answer Thomas Nicholson in a plea of debt for five pounds twelve shillings & six pence. Damage sixty shillings."
Clark had served Virginia for 6 years without pay. After the Revolution, the State refused his petition for a land grant. "Though he narrowly escaped being jailed for the state's debt, he had no debts of his own. It is doubtful if he was ever in debt to anyone--except on behalf of the state of Virgina."--Bakeless, John. Background the Glory: the Life of George Rogers Clark, p. 337.
Watermark: [ONIC?] below partial crest with bell; apparently not in Gravell.
