Summary
During the British occupation of New York City, Elizabeth Rutgers' brewery was operated by Loyalist Joshua Waddington. After the war, Rutgers sued Waddington for damages, and the young Alexander Hamilton represented the defendant. Though the court decided in favor of the plaintiff, she was granted only 791 pounds, considerably less than the 8,000 she had sought. And after the war, Hamilton issued a pamphlet denouncing the harsh treatment of American Loyalists.
