"Do you think it possible that Lee received commutation certificates for me or land warrants from Virginia - the monster pocketed the money he drew to bare my expences - while recruiting I had to advance my own money ...."
"A fellow that fought a battle or two in the last war is made a Brevett Genl. & from obscurity becomes a man of fortune rides in his Pheaton, & the old Revolutionist must pay a fourth of his income in taxes to support the mst extravigant republick in the world."
