Alexander Washington Johnston was an hereditary member of the Society of the Cincinnati from Pennsylvania, representing his father, original member, Colonel Francis Johnston. Alexander served as Assistant Treasurer General of the General Society of the Cincinnatti 1825-1829, and Secretary General, 1829-1855.
