A satire, instructing the military to do quite the opposite of normal, as a counterpoint to Swift's "Advice to servants". To the 7th and this edition were added "Advice to officers of the ordnance, and to the Secretary at War."
Chapters XIX-XXII have separate half title: Advice to officers of the ordnance, and to the Secretary at War.
Engraved frontispiece, entitled Veluti in speculum, shows 7 officers standing in front of a mirror held by the devil.

Errata: p. 186.
Inscription on first front free endpaper: C. Isherwood 1817; also his ownership label; bookplate of John T. Beer.
