The last letter by Washington surviving in the Society’s archives. A circular letter from the President General to the Delegates of the State societies assembled in Philadelphia. It begins, “Although it is easier for you to conceive than for me to explain the pleasing sensations which have been excited in my breast by your congratulations on my appointment to the head of this rising republic …” A response to Society address dated May 4, 1790 (see Box VIII Folder 1D).
