Pemberton and others had been arrested and secured in the Masons' lodge for several days before being exiled to Virginia, where they remained from September 1777 to April 1778.

Struggle for civil liberty and religious freedom. On religious grounds, Pemberton and other Quakers refused to swear allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
