Thomas Hartley, an original member of the Pennsylvania Society, had served in the Canadian campaign in 1776 .
Hartley's Additional Regiment was authorized 12 January 1777 and organized in the spring at Philadelphia to consist of eight companies from eastern Pennsylvania, eastern Maryland, and Delaware. On 22 May, 1777 it was assigned to the 1st Pennsylvania Brigade.
