Full figure, standing in profile, to the left, against a fortification with a cannon to the left and to the right, a flag with the words, "New York
Batt of
Artillery." Below the signature title it states, "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publisher." The likeness may have been based on portraits by James Sharples or Patrick Weaver, or a bust by Giuseppe Caracchi. The uniform is taken from Trumbull's painting of the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.
This engraving appears in Schroeder's Life and times of Washington, Vol 2, between pages 252 and 253. However, the copy on sheet 25 x 27 cm. has been taken from another book or edition, since the publisher and copyright information are missing.
The matted copy is assessioned as 89.1.403, the damaged copy is assessioned as 89.1.403.1 and the smaller copy without publisher and copyright is accessioned as 1971.6.2 and a gift of Mrs. A Clarke Walling.
