Most of the collection was assembled by Edgar Erskine Hume's uncle, Thomas Lindsey Blayney, the husband of his mother's sister, Gertrude South Blayney
A highly decorated physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and other branches, Hume served in both world wars. He was a member of the Virginia branch of the Society of the Cincinnati and served as assistant secretary general (1932-1941), vice president general (1941-1950) and president general (1950-1952). He resided at Anderson House in his later years and his body lay in state in the Anderson House ballroom after his death on January 24, 1952.
In a letter to Thomas Lindsey Blayney, May 11, 1948, Hume wrote: "It is always best to address me at my house, 2118 Massachusetts Avenue NW."
