Bound ms. draft for v. 2 of Balch's work in French (never published); v. 1 was published in Paris in 1872.
After Thomas Balch’s death, his children Thomas Willing Balch, Edwin Swift Balch, and Elise Willing Balch, translated the full work and published both volumes in English under title: "The French in America during the War of Independence of the United States, 1777-1783," Philadelphia : Porter & Coates, 1891-95.
Bound in marbled boards with a red-white-and-blue American flag-motif spine.
Library has Thomas Balch’s own copy of v. 1 of the French title, with ms. corrections by the author and an ownership inscription by his son Edwin Swift Balch (call no.: 973.347 B174, 1872, v. 1).
