The orderly book covers Dec. 1781 to April, 1782 when the 2nd New York Regiment is encamped near Pompton, New Jersey (the regiment won’t move to its final cantonment at Newburgh until the fall of 1782).
Contains l the challenges of maintaining order and discipline in the ranks amidst the shortages and privations the army faced. Orders address conduct, drill, parade, camp guards, courts martial, building huts, and making clothing. admonitions against the issuing of too many passes and furloughs.
The commands and detailed instructions for "forming a Square being a Manoeuvre unknown of in the Regulations" are included (p. [11]-[12])
Accompanying notebook (also relating to the 2nd New York Regiment, 1779-1782): includes guard and fatigue assignments with numbers of men in the winter of Dec. 1779 - Sept.n 1781, and lists of passes issued to individual soldiers organized by company captain. (Interestingly, among the regimental orders in the orderly book are admonitions against the issuing of too many passes and furloughs.) It also includes an itinerary of the march to Yorktown, starting at Dobb's Ferry [New York] August 19 [1781], via Philadelphia, Head of Elk, sailing from Plumb Point to Annapolis, and on to land on the James River near Williamsburg.
