"I am not aware that the question had ever been raised in our Society, whether the grandchildren of an original member whose parent was not a member ... was entitled to relief .... [T[he question generally has been is the applicant a widow or descendant of a [an original crossed out] member and in need."
Both correspondants were successor members of the Society of the Cincinnati -- Fish, of the New York Society; Daveis, of the Massachusetts Society. At the time of this letter, Fish was the President General of the Society; Fish, the Vice-Presicent General.
