Depicts the entire state, including the Hudson Valley, Long Island, eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware Bay; shows county boundaries and "Division line run in 1743 between East New Jersey and West New Jersey."
Cartographic source note in English and French: "This map has been drawn from the survey made in 1769 by order of the commissioners appointed to settle the partition line between the Provences of New York & New Jersey by Bernard Ratzer ... and from another large survey of the northern parts in the possession of the Earl of Dunmore by Gerard Banker. The whole regulated and ascertained by astronomical observations ... [and also in French]."
French-published map, whose title and most details are in English, is an expanded version of William Faden's map, The Province of New Jersey Divided into East and West, Commonly Called the Jerseys, originally published in London in 1777. It expands and adds to the information found in the original Faden map, including more detail in areas beyond the borders of New Jersey, and the addition of notes on military actions, forts, and place names of the mid-Atlantic theater of war. This hand-colored map has been cut into sections and backed in linen so that it could be easily folded to be carried and used in the field, suggesting it was produced for use by the Americans. Although the Faden map of New Jersey is well known, the French version is very rare, with copies found in only a few other institutional collections.
Includes table of "Astronomical observations."
Dissected 9 sections and backed in linen.
This map was originally published in London in 1777 (see MAP L2018F15ff).
