[1]. Spence writes to President Polk (June 17, 1847) for an appointment in the army: " ... My grandfather (Col. W.W. Tibbs) was an ensign in the Revolution and served during the war. His widow, who is now 75 years of age, says "you must give me a commission." I have been raised by the old lady and must now do something for myself. Grandfather had two brothers in the Revolution, Capts. John Tibbs and Thomas Tibbs ..."
[2]. Spence writes to Secretary Marcy (August 17, 1847) that it is a commission in the United States Mounted Rifles he seeks: " ... I am intitled [sic] to an appointment for the following reasons ... my grandfather, Col. Willoughby Tibbs, and his two brothers being officers of the Revolution. My grandfather was at the battles of Princeton, Trenton, Brandywine, and indeed with General Washington during the whole war. Capt. John Tibbs was killed when bearing dispatches from Williamsburg to York Town. His sword I should be happy to wear in Mexico ..."
