Published an assortment of literary material--poetry, humorous anecdotes, biographical sketches, a few tales, and book reviews--as well as proceedings of the state legislature, national news, and news from Europe.
Includes 5 eulogies on the death of George Washington including those by Henry Lee, George Minot, Fisher Ames, Louis Fontanes (a Frenchman whose oration was commissioned by Napoleon), and especially a tribute to Washington written by an anonymous female author: "Soliloquy on the death of Washington, to the editor of the Columbian phenix. Sir, among the very interesting and much admired eulogis and orations on the late General George Washington ... I have discovered nothing of the kind from the female part of our mourning country, on this lamentable event ... April 12 th, 1800," signed G.S. (p. 213-217); also includes a note (p. 449): "the anniversay of independence was commemorated at Gen. Knox's residence, at Thomas-town, [Maine, 1800] ..."
Frontispiece was supposed to accompany the first issue, and a description of it appeared in the first issue, but not included, owing to the bad engraving.
