In left margin of p. [1], by the hand of Napoleon: "Approuvé qu'il jouisse de la pension que lui fait l'Empr. d'Autriche. NAP."
This petition on behalf of Jacques de Segond, who had served in the Continental Army during the revolutionary war (and subsequently in Austria) requests permission for him to replace his uniform as an Austrian major general for that of a retired French brigadier general.
Segond also seeks permission to wear his Eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati "to recompense him for the loss of the Cross of St. Louis which he had given up according to the law."
Segond arrived in America in June 1777 and volunteered his services to the Continental Army, fighting at Brandywine and Germantown. On February 2, 1778, Congress appointed him captain of the Third Battalion of Pulaski's Legion. He was sent south later that year to join General Lincoln’s forces, and served at Savannah and Charleston, where he was taken prisoner. He was exchanged in late 1782 and was promoted to major by brevet by a special resolution of Congress in September 1783.
