Summary
Certificate appointing John H. Smith as a commissioner signed by Littleton Waller Tazewell, governor of Virginia, January 9, 1836: "... John H. Smith, whose name is subscribed to the annexed certificate is commissioner appointed by me ... to examine and report upon claims for unsatisfied military land bounties ... and for other purposes ..."|With: "Petition for Bounty Lands of the Heirs of Moses Rawlings, Colo. Virga. Cont. Line," endorsed twice by John H. Smith (March 13, 1834 & January 9, 1836): "The evidence in this case is voluminous ... It appears that Moses Rawlings was Lieutenant of Rifleman in June 1775 ... that after the close of the war he stood very high in the estimation of General Washington, & was in 1791 offered a command in the United States navy."|Moses Rawlings was commander of the Maryland and Virginia Rifle Regiment when he was wounded and taken prisoner at Fort Washington in November 1776. Upon his release two years he was appointed colonel of one of the sixteen additional Continental Regiments. He wrote to Washington concerning pay for his soldiers, noting the difficulty in finding recruits (to which Washington suggested that Rawling advance his own money to pay his men).|Rawling was an original member of the Maryland Society.|Purchased in memory of John Dwight Kilbourne, a member of the Maryland Society and director of the Society of the Cincinnati museum and library, 1972-1991.
