"In your issue of __ you correct the statement which you had prviously published and stated in substance that Chief Justice John Marshall and not Richard Henry Lee was the author the celebrated sentence First in war, first in peace & first in the hearts of his country men ... It came from neither. The sentence originally occurs in the resolution announcement of Washington's [death] sent to Congress by Judge Marshall ... In his Life of Washington, he states, howver, that these resolutions had been prepared by Gen. Henry Lee ... The sentence afterwards can be found in the oration pronounced upon the character of Washington by Gen. Henry Lee who had been selected by the Va. delegation ... The only change being the substitition of the word 'country men' for 'fellow citizens' ..."
