Artillery manual that remained a standard text into 19th century. It covers all aspects of artillery equipment and use, including proper placement, staffing and firing for sieges, offensive and defensive actions and retreats, types of guns, and standard commands.
Library copy: unusual handmade binding; former owner glued and sewed pieces of leather to the original blue pastepaper wrappers; two fragments of the late 12th century vellum manuscript of St. Augustine's Contra Julianum Pelagianum; missing a tie or strap suggesting improvised field binding.
Ms. notes on title verso: Corporal François Leroux of the Ninth Artillery Company of Seine-Inférieure (probably the binder); Captain Bougeard, 15 June 1899, accepting Leroux's grandsons' presentation of this copy on behalf of the Rouen Cercle Militaire.
