College essay while a student at Allegheny College, 1859-60.
Norris concludes: “Can we then blot the fair name of Washington by saying that this execution was unjust? Posterity would cry out against it. The World of mankind wherever the name of Washington is known and revered, wherever his memory is cherished by intelligent freemen, would spurn the assertion as a libel on the American Character.”
Norris went on to serve in the Tennessee 7th Infantry during the Civil War and is remembered for enduring heavy fire to save the company flag during the retreat at the Battle of Gettysburg.
