Note
Formed by the Adams administration during the period of the Quasi-War with France, the Union Brigade (part of the U.S. Additional (or Provisional) Army), was under the command of Major General Alexander Hamilton.
This orderly book contains appx. 60 orders, relating to provisioning, court martials, furloughs, inspection returns, details relating the disbandiment of the Brigades,etc.; also includes orders issued by Hamilton, William Stephens Smith and William North (all original members of the NY Society).
Hamilton’s lengthy order of February 20, 1800 concerning the celetration of George Washington's brithday: " ... Saturday the 22nd Inst. as the Birth day of their Commander in Chief General George Washington to join with their country in expressions of gratitude to the Supreme Being that he has favored them so long with so exalted a leader whose Patriotism & Virtue have glaringly illumined the western world – And while they breath the signs of mourning & lamentation that he has sunk in to the silent grave they will cultivate a spirit of resignation to the decision of a wise and over ruling Providence." The order lays out in detail the plan for prayer, military orations, an artillery salute, military parade and music.
Following [5] p. on tempering steel as well as recipes for making metal cements; blank leaves following.
