Note
Castaing recounts his recent movements and expresses his desire to continue to return to service in Col. Jackson’s regiment in the winter. He writes that, upon applying for a "waiter" [a servant], he had been informed by the adjutant general that waiters for aides-de-camp and brigade majors come from the officer’s own regiment: "if it agreeable, I do prefer an American, and particularly old Jones if he can be spared."
Castaing, a Frenchman from the West Indies, joined the Continental Army in 1777, and became aide-de-camp to General Duportail, chief of engineers, with whom he was serving at West Point.
Castaing originally joined the MA Society and transferred to the French branch on July 5, 1784.
