Resolution to call for enlistment of 1800 men: "Also Resolved, That the men detached from the counties of Suffolk, Essex, Middlesex, York, Cumberland, Worcester, Lincoln [etc.] shall be immediately marched to Providence to fill up the battalions of Wade and Jacob’s of this state, and to be under command of the Continental officer who has the chief command of that department ..."--p. [2].|Reflects the building tensions in the months leading up to the Battle of Rhode Island in August 1778. With Newport occupied by the British since December 1776, and the Continentals building up their forces in Rhode Island under Gen. John Sullivan, there had been numerous raids and counterattacks in the state from both sides. In late May 1778 British and Hessian forces attacked Bristol, Warren and Tiverton, burning and destroying many boats and buildings.
